인간은 공포심을 자신의 힘으로 완전히 극복할 수 있을 때까지 자신의 행동 만큼에 대해서는 노예적, 즉 참된 의미에서 자신에게 충실하지 못하고 겉으로만 그럴듯한 모습을 취할 뿐이다. 그것은 그 사람의 생각 자체가 거짓으로 가득 차있어 자기 자신에게 마치 노예나 겁쟁이 같은 생각을 가지기 때문이다.

mess는 보통은 `혼란, 난장판'이라는 뜻으로 쓰이지만, 여기서는 `한끼분의 식사, 한 그릇의 음식'이라는 뜻. pottage는 `진한 채소 스프'
비슷하게 To sell his birthright for a pottage of lentils. 콩국 한그릇 먹기위해 타고난 권리를 팔다. 즉 팥죽 한그릇에 장자의 명분을 팔다. (일시적인 이익 때문에 영구적인 이익을 팔다)
다음은 창세기의 해당 구절.
25:29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
25:30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
25:31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
25:32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me ?
25:33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

五十步 百步. (오십보 백보. 원래는 五十步笑百步.)
오십보 도망간 사람이 백보 도망간 사람을 비웃는다는 뜻으로 본질적으로 별차이가 없는 것을 일컫는 말. 출전은 맹자, 양혜왕편. 맹자가 양혜왕에게 전쟁터에서 겁이나서 도망친 두 병사가 있는데 한 명은 오십보를 도망가다 서고, 다른 한명은 백보를 도망갔는데 오십보를 도망간 병사가 백보를 도망간 병사를 보고 비겁하다고 비웃으면 어떠합니까라고 물은데서 나온말.

색깔 없는 것은 1페니, 색깔 있는 것은 2펜스. (포장은 달라도 내용은 한가지)
둘다 다 푼돈이라는 점에서는 같다는 뜻. 형편없는 것에 겉보기에 그럴 듯하게 색깔만 입혀 놓았자 그게 그것.
